Cak Nur and Bang Akbar presented two exemplary figures in the collective memory of HMI. Cak Nur is remembered as a thinker, while Bang Akbar is a politician. However, both are united by an inclusive Islamic understanding. This cannot be separated from the world of Activism and Leadership at HMI. Cak Nur led HMI in 1966 – 1969 and 1969 – 1971. Bang Akbar emerged as Cak Nur's successor to lead HMI in 1972 – 1974.

National commitment, awareness of diversity and friendship across religions and organizations are reflected in Bang Akbar's leadership in various youth mass organizations.

At the State Palace, President Soeharto received Bang Akbar as General Chair of the KNPI DPP (1978 – 1981) and expressed his nationalism for his youthful speech. Starting from HMI and the Cipayung group, activism at KNPI became a new milestone in Bang Akbar's journey to the national political stage. As Minister of Youth and Sports (1988 – 1993), Bang Akbar succeeded in guiding Indonesian athletes to achieve brilliant achievements at world level. by winning a silver medal in archery at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and winning Indonesia's first two gold medals in Badminton at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
During his tenure as Chairman of the DPR RI (1999-2004), Bang Akbar played an important role in the success of the reform agenda through legislation various laws and at the same time played an active role in establishing inter-parliamentary cooperation as President of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Organization (2002-2003) and President of Parliamentary Union OIC Member (2003-2004)
As Minister of State for Public Housing (1993-1998), Bang Akbar empowered the functions of various stakeholders, starting from national housing, state-owned banks such as BTN, Indonesian real estate, private development parties, to regional governments, to work together in realizing housing development for low-income communities. Bang Akbar emerged as the pioneer of an innovative convention as an open and democratic political mechanism to select the best presidential candidate for the Golkar Party. With a chivalrous spirit, Bang Akbar gave a speech that the convention had run democratically through secret voting and invited all parties to fully support General Wiranto as Golkar's presidential candidate in 2004.
