TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA - A senior politician from the Golkar Party, Akbar Tandjung, said that the people are the most sovereign party and can determine the candidate for leader. Through the people's sovereign choice, it can prevent transactional practices or buying and selling of votes in elections.
"Because this transactional practice destroys the democratic system," he said, when he was a guest speaker for the 16th series of the 16th series of National Political Leadership School (SKPB) participants on the AT Institute's SKPB YouTube account, quoted Wednesday (25/8/2021). For that, he said, efforts are needed to anticipate transactional politics.
Improving the quality of democracy in Indonesia must be a serious concern from all parties, including the people themselves. "This is what we really need to look for in an effort, a regulation, so that transactional transactions do not become something that strengthens our democratic life," he said.
Apart from that, according to him, the people must also improve the quality of their political awareness so that they are not easily influenced, lured by several transactional steps. "So that resulted in the community or people no longer showing democratic values. So this should be our task going forward," he said.
Apart from the sovereign people, he asked all parties to improve the democratic system in Indonesia. This effort, according to him, can also anticipate transactional practices in democratic life in this country. He gave an example of transactional politics that occurred during the election of council members.
He explained that candidates for council members have an interest in getting the most votes so that they can use their financial capabilities to attract support. “He used that sufficient financial ability to get him elected as a board member. This is a transactional practice, this is what we must prevent," he added.
Present at this event, the Program Director of the AT Institute, Dr. Agustian Prasetya; AT Institute Executive Director, Dr Puji Wahono; and Head of SKPB Dr. Alfan Alfian. As is known, SKPB regularly invites experts from various fields of science and practitioners to fill in the creative and actual learning process.
Participants consist of student and youth activists who are members of the Cipayung Plus Group. Participants were selected from various regions in Indonesia, and during this pandemic it was held online. In addition to leadership lectures, participants also received lectures on economics, ethics, local politics, elections and the party system.
